NAPLES & POMPEII

Notoriously known as a rough city, many tourists only use Naples for the airport that is the closest international stop to get to the more resort destinations. I must admit that this was also my reason for stopping through, but my love for pizza left us to explore the area a bit more and stay a night.

From the ride from the train station, it was apparent that this was going to be a gnarly 18 hours. The taxi ride put NYC taxis to shame. If you easily get car sick, you may need to take a Dramamine ahead of time as your cab jerks its way through the narrow and crowded streets filled with cars, people and trash. Since my visit, I’ve read that there is a new Mayor in town that has enacted new initiatives to clean up the city.

STAY
Palazzo Caracciolo Napoli
, Via Carbonara 111
This is a former palace and is literally somewhat of a fort from the outside world. The security at this hotel is top notch. Imagine the biggest bouncers you have ever seen –they are the doorman and guards for this hotel. The entrance is a grand heavy wood door that closes in the evening to further aid in keeping the guests at this hotel safe. There is an interior terrace area so that even if you do decide to stay on the property, you can get some fresh air without having to step outdoors into the hustle and bustle.

Pizza in Naples is regulated/certified-meaning there is an authority that confirms that your pizza is being properly made the Napoletana way. This place does it right and without the wait of some of the other more popular spots.

DRINK
Perditempo
, Vico S. Pietro a Maiella 8
At first glance, from the outside, you aren’t sure if this is a bar, a bike shop, a record shop or a bookstore. It’s a artist hangout/pitstop for locals to sit, have a drink and use as a “Timewaster”. The staff is super cool and welcoming whether you are a local or a tourist.

EXPLORE
imagePompeii

A short train ride from Naples, Pompeii was an ancient Roman town that was wiped out by an eruption of the nearby Mt. Vesuvius volcano in 79 AD. It can be reached by taking the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Pompeii Scavi stop.

Sansevero Chapel, Via Francesco de Sanctis 19/21
The Veiled Christ is located in this chapel that has been converted into a museum. The detail in the veil that covers Christ is definitely worth a visit to see in person.

  1. I loved my stay in Naples. The historic centre is fascinating and I didn’t feel unsafe anywhere. I would go back any day

    • Agreed! As time passes, you settle into the fast pace of the city. I definitely want to return and explore other areas, especially along the coast since we only had time to walk around the historic core.
P.s. thanks for stopping by and checking out the site!
