The most recent host of the Summer 2012 Olympics and a lively multicultural city, London is a must visit when heading to Europe. Unfortunately, I have always spent less than 24 hours in the city for each of my visits because it was always a layover for my next destination, but even if you only have 24 hours, you can see a few major sites.
STAY
Sanctum Soho Hotel, 20 Warwick Street
Central location, ideal if you plan to work some shopping into your schedule since it is walking distance from Oxford Circus. Small rooms, but perfect location if you want to stay out late for a short cab ride home.
Metro: Oxford Circus or Piccadilly Circus
Park Plaza Victoria, 239 Vauxhall Bridge Road
More affordable traditional/business hotel that is in close proximity to many major sites/attractions if site seeing is your plan. You can walk all over the city from this location. Also, the location is in walking distance to the Victoria train station which is a direct shot to the Gatwick Airport via the Gatwick Express.
Metro: Victoria
EAT

Nice stop when you want a warm, hearty meal. You select your mash (potatoes), your gravy and your pie.

DRINK
Cask Pub & Kitchen, 6 Charlwood Street
